INSTRUCTIONS for Easter Basket:
1. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin and cut foam ball in half. Note: Reserve one half for a future project. Press remaining half ball on a rigid surface to flatten one side.
2. Refer to diagram to cut top 4" from foam cone. Mark a line around cone 5" from base. Indent cone on line by pressing foam onto square edge of a counter or table. Note: This will become rabbit's neck.
3. Refer to diagram to hollow out lower 5" of cone and half ball by scooping out foam with a tablespoon. Leave approximately 1/4"-1/2" outer shell intact, working carefully to avoid cracking foam. Paint bottom 1" of cone and half ball brown to match robe.
4. Cut a 3/4" slice lengthwise from foam egg and discard. Follow Step 3 to hollow out egg. Paint egg pink.
5. Cut rabbit patterns from felt as indicated.
6. Overlap straight edges of head and robe pieces 1/4"-1/2", check fit on cone, and then glue to form cone-shaped tubes. Sew gathering stitches 1/4" from top of felt robe, place on cone, and then gather felt even with neck indentation. Note: To gather felt throughout, use a large-eye needle with fine-gauge wire and hand sew gathering stitches where indicated. Gather felt on wire and then twist wires together to secure. Trim excess wire.
7. Glue batting around top 5" of cone. Gather top of felt head 1/4" from edge and turn. Sew gathering stitches close to bottom edge but do not gather. Place head on cone, aligning head and robe seams at center back. Glue head to batting with bottom edge 1-1/2" below neck indentation. Pull gathering stitches to close bottom of head and twist wire ends together to secure.
8. Using photo as a guide, glue two 1" tan pom poms side by side to head for muzzle, centering them 1/2" above neck indentation. Glue a 1/2" pink pom pom nose to center top of muzzle and then wiggle eyes just above nose. Glue felt teeth together. Glue layered tooth with top tucked inside muzzle pom poms.
9. Glue white shirt to upper front of robe with top edge concealing wire gathered around neck. Wrap vest around robe with edges overlapping at center front and glue. Fold back and glue lapels as indicated on pattern. Glue a 3/4" button where vest overlaps.
10. Cut two 5" lengths from a white chenille stem. Pair and glue tan felt hands, sandwiching one end of a white chenille stem between layers.
11. Cut two 4-1/2" x 5-1/4" sleeves from white felt. Overlap long edges 1/4" and glue to form tubes. Sew gathering stitches around one end of each sleeve but do not gather. Insert a chenille stem hand into each sleeve, pull gathering stitches around wrists, and twist wires to secure. Turn sleeves right side out with felt tubes covering arms. Gather top of each sleeve, allowing 1/4" of stem arm to extend beyond felt. Use a screwdriver to form tiny holes in robe and foam body at shoulders to attach arms. Glue arms into holes with seams concealed at bottom.
12. Fold each brown chenille stem in half. Starting with folded end at tip, shape and glue a chenille stem outlining each tan felt ear. Twist stem ends together at base of ears. Let glue dry and then trim any excess felt beyond chenille stem outline. Use a screwdriver to make two small holes in top of head and then glue ears inside holes. Glue 2" tan pom pom to top of head between ears.
13. Turn cone body on end and weight hollow area with glass marbles. Align hollow half ball on bottom of cone with flat sides together and pin in place temporarily. Test rabbit's rocking motion, adding or subtracting marbles as necessary. When satisfied, remove pins and glue ball to cone permanently.
14. Cut a 2" length of ribbon. Fold ends of remaining ribbon to meet at center and glue to form a loop. Fold 2" ribbon in half lengthwise, wrap it around center of loop, and glue to form bow tie. Glue bow tie to rabbit's neck.
15. Place glasses on rabbit with lenses resting on muzzle. Bend wire ear pieces around sides of head.
16. Glue remaining 2" tan pom pom to bottom center back of robe for a tail.
17. Wrap Easter Rabbit arms around egg and glue egg to hands.
